There is scarcely anything else that serves so well to increase our love for one another, and thus to increase our happiness, as kindness. St. Paul gives kindness as one of the marks of charity. Who of us does not know persons whom we esteem most highly, having almost nothing in their favor but kindness? We do not bear constantly enough in mind the great value of kind words and actions. Very often a few kind words spoken to the afflicted will do more good than all the other assistance that could be given. Yet, indeed, kindness towards the poor and afflicted should not stop with words.
